Gatekeeper Resolutions Day 2: Standstill Upshot Drill with Putters and Midranges

Day 2! Yesterday was about some mental goals, let’s do something physical today. We’re going to work in the field on standstill shots with neutral putters or mid-ranges. This is one of the most useful things to do because putters and mid-ranges don’t hide bad habits of mechanics the way that faster or more overstable discs do.

  1. Many “sell out” efficiency in their throw (like adding hitches, moving too quickly, bad sync in upper/lower body). Throwing standstill shots removes the variables of runup.

  2. Objectives:  focus on the weight shift and initiating the pull-through with hips. Engage the front glute when bracing. Disc in same orientation at max reachback and release. This is pretty similar to a drill that Ezra Aderhold, Danny Lindahl, and some other pros and teachers use, where they’re trying to keep the disc in one location while sidestepping, to practice creating a “power pocket”.

  3. You “win” the game when you remove extraneous movements, and the indicators of that are “awareness” of what a specific body part or motion is doing throughout the throw. So much of disc golf depends on getting your body to work together smoothly, so I recommend doing this drill as a warmup a couple times a week.
